The club hockey team got off to a bad start in its drive to finish the semester strong against the No. 3 team in the Southeast Region this weekend.

CMU lost twice against Miami, 4-1 on Saturday and 4-3 on Friday. The losses extend the team's losing streak to three games, its longest of the season. Central is 10-6 overall.

"They were a good team and they were outshooting us," said senior Craig Lipar. "That's what it kind of came down to."

Lipar said senior goaltenders Shaun Stewart, who got the start on Friday, and Mike Jakubik, who got Saturday's start, faced a combined 109 shots on the weekend.

"The goaltending by both goaltenders was phenomenal," said junior Andrew Anson.

Sophomore Jordan Jakubik scored all four goals for CMU on the weekend. Jakubik now has 32 points on the season.

"We didn't generate enough scoring opportunities for ourselves," Lipar said. "When one player has all four of your goals … we need to spread out our offense a little more and other people need to step up offensively and defensively on our team."

Hurting the team this weekend was the time spent in the penalty box and on the penalty kill. The penalties ended up hurting Central because of Miami's strong power play.

"They're power play was really good," Lipar said.

The team faces No. 3 Michigan State on Saturday in East Lansing and knows it needs to pick up its game.

"This was kind of like an eye-opener for us," Lipar said. "That we're going to need to pick up our level of play to compete and keep our ranking in the top five where we want it to be."
