"Binge drinking is not a crime - it's a risk behavior that leads to problems, not unlike cigarettes, eating too much and not exercising enough," said Dr. Tim Naimi, a physician working with the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Many of these statistics stem from individuals who partake in binge drinking, which qualifies as more than five drinks in one night for a man, and more than four drinks in one night for a woman, according to the NIAAA.

"That seems extremely low because five drinks wouldn't even affect me," said Sterling Heights senior Deo Passarelli.

Passarelli, who according to NIAAA standards is considered a binge drinker, said he usually drinks a pint of vodka before heading out to a bar, where he usually spends about $100.

NIAAA statistics show that adults are not the only people who binge drink - 90 percent of those under the age of 21 who consume alcohol do so in the form of binge drinking.

"If you drink about one an hour, you're pretty good," Minelli said.
