This weekend Fish 'n' Chips will sing to a bigger audience than those in the residence halls.

"Every couple weeks, we go to the dorms, knock on doors and sing to people," said Forrest Nelson, a Traverse City sophomore. "We like to get our name out there, and dorm gigs are the easiest way, and the most fun."

The Central Michigan University's all-male a-cappella group will host a concert 8 p.m. Saturday at Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium.

"It's our winter concert," Nelson said. "We have a concert every semester and this is our biggest one."

Nelson said Fish 'n' Chips started five years ago. The group focused more on 1970s and '80s music then, but expanded to cover more recent songs, he said.

Fish 'n' Chips rehearses three days a week and is made up of 13 members, less than half of whom are music majors.

Livonia junior Mike Maurer said he is in Fish 'n' Chips for the long haul.

"I'm pretty sure I'm going to stick it out through my entire time at college because it's fun," he said.

Maurer said he first heard about Fish 'n' Chips through his residence hall.

"The president of Fish 'n' Chips at the time lived there, and a lot of my friends knew him and told me about it when I asked about musical groups on campus," he said.

The same is true of Maurer's former roommate, Warren junior Timmy Foster.

"Me and Mike Maurer lived together in the same dorm, so we both heard about it the same way," Foster said.

Foster said he found his own niche in Fish 'n' Chips by beatboxing.

"I heard they needed a beatboxer, so I worked up my skill and came in and did that," he said.

Tickets for the concert are $6 at the door and $5 from a Fish 'n' Chips member beforehand. Ten percent of the proceeds will go to the Children's Miracle Network.
