Author speaks about difficult life experiences
The College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences is sponsoring a lecture by author Theresa Flores. Flores will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Lake Michigan room of the Bovee University Center. Flores will talk about her experiences of slavery and trafficking while living in an upper middle class neighborhood in a Detroit suburb. For two years she was drugged, raped and tortured. Flores was kept in bondage while trying to pay back a nearly impossible debt. She attended school with her abusers while trying to keep her family safe.

Organizations selling holiday cards to help animals
The Public Relations Student Society of America and PR Central will sell holiday cards to raise money for the Michigan Humane Society. There will be a table set up outside the Down Under Food Court in the Bovee University Center from 3 to 5 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The cards are sold in boxes of 15 for $7.50. There are four different styles of cards. The Michigan Humane Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping end companion animal homelessness, providing quality care for animals and promoting humane values.

Donations supporting Relay for Life
The Residence Hall Assembly and the Civic Engagement Team are hosting a Formal-Dress Mocktail Party to benefit Relay for Life. The night will include food, drinks, music and activities. It will take place from 8 p.m. to midnight Thursday in the Kulhavi Hall classrooms. The organizations are asking for a $5 donation. Relay for Life is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and raises money and awareness to fight cancer. Teams of people gather at community locations and take turns walking or running laps. The money raised supports the American Cancer Society in their efforts to educate and advocate, conduct research and offer services to cancer victims and their families.
