In an effort to help students graduate on time, Mike Zeig has come up with some solutions.
The Sterling Heights senior and Student Government Association president will present a list of course offering concerns to the Board of Trustees today.
Zeig said he is not looking for a plan to graduate in four years, but a graduate plan which is decided upon by the student.
"I think it's important for students to have the flexibility to determine the amount of years they will be here," he said.
However, Zeig said he isn't expecting the board to take action because they're not making the decisions.
Zeig said Provost Gary Shapiro has forwarded the concerns to the deans, and the deans will then forward them to the department. The deans will then report back to the provost.
Zeig started the process this semester by researching the 2007-08 academic bulletin and conferring with University President Michael Rao, Dean of Students Bruce Roscoe, Registrar Karen Hutslar, Academic Advising and Assistance Director Michelle Howard, Associate Registrar Barbara Lindley and the chair of the council of chairs Suzzane Shellady.
Zeig said everyone is willing to work together on the issue, but said finding common ground will be the biggest issue.
"There are a lot of factors that go into scheduling courses and I don't expect the system to be perfect, but I think a little better fine tuning and looking more at long-range projections will help students overall," Zeig said.
One concern Zeig found in his research is the lack of a designator indicating courses that aren't offered for several years and offers the solution to making those classes "on demand" if not offered for five or more years. In addition, courses listed as "on demand only" and required for majors and minors and in the University Program should be offered with regularity, he said.
Hutslar said the colleges and departments have designated certain courses in the bulletin they know for sure are offered every fall or spring, while on demand courses are offered as needed.
