Kathryn Koch will serve as associate dean for the College of Education and Human Services on a permanent basis.

Koch, who has held the position as an interim since February, met all of the qualifications for the position and was promoted Tuesday, said dean Karen Adams.

"She has the right degree and experiences," she said. "She also brings an enthusiasm for our programs and ensures that we put on the best programs possible."

Adams said a national search was conducted to find the applicant best fit for the associate dean position.

The search began at the end of the 2007 spring semester. Diane Krider, associate dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, led the search committee.

"We put together an advertisement describing the position and had a number of applicants," Adams said. "Diane organized the applications during the summer and when we came back the next fall, we could narrow the best applicants."

Koch's experience with leadership played a big part in her hiring, Adams said.

"We specifically looked for someone who held leadership roles," she said. "Kathy has a record of scholarship grants, she has published a book, she has worked with signing grants. All of those experiences will be very helpful in preparing her for this job."

Koch said it was a long process to get the job and she was constantly was wondering how it would turn out.

"I'm very happy with where I am," she said. "I wouldn't have applied if I didn't think I could do well."

Koch also has served as the chair of the department of Human Environmental Studies since 2003. She said she is excited for the construction of the college's new building, a $50-million structure scheduled for completion by February 2009.

"The opening of the new building is a big change and probably my greatest excitement," she said.

Adams said Koch is involved in the building's planning.

"She's been working with the engineering firm and aspects of the signage," Adams said. "She has also had some involvement with fundraising."

Koch has been a faculty member at CMU since 1987.

"As associate dean, I'll support the dean and help move the college forward," Koch said. "But it's not the type of position where you expect to make significant changes."
