Budget and design layouts for Rose Arena renovations were disclosed at CMU's Board of Trustees meeting Thursday.

The project will cost about $20 million and feature a distinctly new entrance.

The university hired Paul Urbanek, vice president and design director of SmithGroup Inc., last spring to estimate what could be done to upgrade the current facility.

Athletic Director David Heeke, along with Trustee John Kulhavi and Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations Michael Leto will be responsible for gaining the monetary support. Funding for the project will come strictly from donations.

"I believe it can be done," Kulhavi said. "I'd like to start raising money as soon as possible."

He said they will target certain alumni to gain funding.

"I can tell you this - we will go after major contributors," Kulhavi said. "We have a host of ideas."

If the financial needs of the initiative are met, the building will receive a wealth of improvements, both inside and out. Along with a stylish entrance, the building would be much more visible from Broomfield Road.

There also would be practice courts added on to the north side of the complex to free up room on Rose Arena's main floor.

"There's so much conflict for that piece of real estate," Urbanek said.

The inside would include more bathrooms and air conditioning to go along with a few hundred more seats.

The main theme, however, was the idea of transforming Rose Arena into an event center. The improvements would make it a better host to concerts, commencement ceremonies and other happenings.

"One of the great things is you'll be able to do more than athletics - much more." Urbanek said

Towers Maintenance

Architectural and engineering errors in the construction of Fabiano and Celani halls will require extensive maintenance work, Trustee Gail Torreano said.

She said $400,000 will be allocated to improve the buildings.
