Registration for CMU's 45th annual Siblings Weekend is underway.
The event, which runs from Feb. 8-10, 2008, is a chance for students, faculty and alumni to bring their siblings, children, friends or anybody of any age to Central.
For co-chair Carolyn Seppey, SIBS weekend is an opportunity for students to show off their university.
"SIBS Weekend, to me, is a time to bring siblings, friends, neighbors, etc. and show them what CMU has to offer," the Sterling Heights senior said. "It's also a chance to have a good time."
Those interested in registering for SIBS Weekend, or learning about the events and history, can visit stulife.cmich.edu/programs.html and select 'SIBS Weekend.' Registration will end at 5 p.m. Feb. 1.
SIBS Weekend Public Relations Chair Alyssa Petiprin said the carnival usually is what people enjoy the most about the weekend.
Events this year also will include roller skating, swimming, ice skating, a rock wall, movies and much more, said SIBS Weekend carnival chair Cortney English.
"SIBS is one of CMU's longest standing traditions," said the Charlevoix senior. "It really helps improve the idea of CMU."
SIBS Weekend also gives CMU some good exposure, said Heather Tobel, Brighton senior and entertainment chair.
"Students are able to bring people they know here and they get a chance to see what CMU brings," she said.
Registration chair Scott Hillman got involved in SIBS Weekend because he came as a participant before attending CMU.
"I used to come up in high school with my sister," said the Macomb sophomore. "I went to events and also worked the events. It helped me decide to come to CMU."
A chance to help
The mass of volunteers has been the biggest reason for the success of SIBS Weekend.
With approximately 3,000 participants expected for SIBS Weekend and so many activities planned, the committee needs a lot of volunteers.
English said the committee has set a goal of 700 volunteers for this year's SIBS Weekend.
"SIBS would not be a success without volunteers," Seppey said. "They're the reason the whole weekend happens."
Tobel said students can start signing up to volunteer at http://www.cmich.edu/volunteer in January.
Students also can get more involved with SIBS Weekend by joining a committee. General meetings are at 3 p.m. each Friday in Powers 136. Any student interested can come and join any of the seven committees.
Seppey said the best part of being a part of SIBS is seeing the weekend play out after all the planning.
"I like seeing everyone's faces and knowing all the hard work was worth it," she said.
