Four individual titles propel CMU to tourney win

The wrestling team outdistanced Oklahoma State on Tuesday to win the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev. The Chippewas had four wrestlers earn individual titles to beat the second-place Cowboys, 152.5-128, netting CMU its second consecutive team title at the tournament.

DETROIT - Purdue kicker Chris Summers converted a 40-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in regulation to beat CMU 51-48 on Wednesday in front of a bowl-record 60,624 people at the 11th annual Motor City Bowl in Detroit. The play ended a thrilling second half in which the Chippewas fought back from a 34-13 halftime deficit to tie the game at 41 apiece by the end of the third quarter.

DETROIT - Football coach Butch Jones flew to Morgantown, W. Va. on Thursday to interview for West Virginia's head coaching position, according to a report on ESPN.com. Jones was the wide receivers coach at West Virginia for two seasons under former WVU coach Rich Rodriguez before becoming CMU's head coach last January.

Police continue search for suspects

Mount Pleasant Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle that struck and ran over a 21-year-old Mount Pleasant man hours into the new year. James Ronald Williams is in serious, but stable condition at Saginaw Covenant Hospital. He was found Tuesday morning lying in a grassy area in between O'Kelly's Sports Bar and Grill and the Stadium Mall.

Football coach under contract through 2012

Butch Jones will return as CMU's football coach for the next five seasons. Jones, a former West Virginia assistant who was named as a candidate to return there as head coach, has agreed to a new five-year contract that runs through 2012. The deal comes after WVU announced Thursday morning it will hire interim coach Bill Stewart to the full-time position.

DETROIT - They left it all out on the field. That's how Dan LeFevour described his Central Michigan teammates' effort in the second half of Wednesday's 51-48 loss to Purdue in the Motor City Bowl at Ford Field. Senior defensive tackle Steven Friend kneeled in the middle of the field with no time left in his Chippewa career after Chris Summers' 40-yard kick ended one of the best comeback attempts in school history.

CMU beats Michigan, 78-67

ANN ARBOR - Long after the final buzzer had sounded Saturday, CMU players and family members lingered on the floor and in the stands of Crisler Arena, soaking in their 78-67 win against Michigan. It was CMU's fourth consecutive win of the season, and its first win over a Big Ten team since the 2002-2003 Chippewas knocked off Michigan in Ann Arbor.
