Four individual titles propel CMU to tourney win

The wrestling team outdistanced Oklahoma State on Tuesday to win the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev.

The Chippewas had four wrestlers earn individual titles to beat the second-place Cowboys, 152.5-128, netting CMU its second consecutive team title at the tournament. Seniors Luke Smith (125 pounds), Brandon Sinnott (174), Christian Sinnott (184) and Wynn Michalak (197) all placed first in their weight class.

Smith, the No. 2 seed, beat the No. 3 seed, California Poly's Boris Navochkov 3-1 in the semifinals. He then beat top-seeded Tanner Gardner of Stanford 4-3 to win the title.

No. 3 seed Brandon Sinnott defeated the top two seeds at 174 pounds to earn first place. He beat Oklahoma State's Brandon Mason 4-2 and beat Navy's Matt Stolpinski 4-0 in the finals.

Christian Sinnott used a 9-2 win against Cornell's Michael Moore to advance to the finals against California State Fullerton's Ian Murphy at 184 pounds, which he won by medical forfeit.

Michalak won Central's fourth individual with two pins, a major decision and a technical fall before Arizona State's Jason Trulson 3-1 in the finals.

Six CMU wrestlers also placed in the top six. Sophomore Trevor Stewart was second as 165 pounds, junior Eric Kruger was third at 141 pounds, redshirt freshman 149-pounder Nathaniel Holt and senior heavyweight Bubba Gritter both finished fifth and sophomores Conor Beebe and Tyler Grayson placed sixth at 133 and 157 pounds, respectively.

The No. 6 Chippewas will compete at Midlands on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill. CMU took fourth in the event last season.
