Singer wins opera award
Scott Bearden, a 1995 graduate, placed first in the second annual Chester Ludgin Memorial American Verdi Baritone Competition. Bearden beat 60 other competitors for first place, which came with a $5,000 prize.
Bearden also has performed at numerous other venues, such as Opera San Jose and the Mississippi Opera. He has performed various pieces, including "The Barber of Seville."
In addition to winning the award, Bearden will perform with past winners March 16 at New York City's Merkin Hall.

Broadway Theater announces play auditions
Auditions for the play "Lend Me A Tenor" will be take place between 6 and 8 p.m. today and Tuesday at the Veteran Memorial Library, 301 S. University St. The Broadway Players are conducting the auditions. The play will run Feb. 22-25. Anyone with questions regarding the auditions can call 772-1927.

CMU names new Health Services director
James Barker was hired to be the new University Health Services director and began Jan. 2.
Working in Oklahoma since 2004, Barker acted as chief operating officer at the Jonesboro Regional Medical Center of the National Education Association. Barker holds an associate's degree in nursing, a bachelor's degree in business management and a master's in business administration.
Barker took over for Sarah Campbell, who retires Jan. 31 after working at CMU since 1966.
Art Exhibits
Faculty's artwork to be displayed
An art exhibit featuring the works of printmaker and assistant professor of printmaking Johanna Paas will run Tuesday through Feb. 2 in downtown Mount Pleasant's Art Reach, 319 S. University Ave. The works displayed will be free for display and open to the public. For more information please call 773-8860.

Student veteran received Air Force fellowship
A student veteran in the Doctor of Health Administration program is serving in a state representative's office on Capitol Hill. Maj. Bryan Winter, whose deployment to Iraq has twice intertwined with his doctorate studies, said his work in CMU's off-campus DHA program aided him during the competition for the fellowship. Winter will represent the Department of Defense. "Fellows can educate government officials based on our respective areas of expertise, which could be health care, military science, space systems or other areas," he said.

Final prospective staff night
Interested in being a resident assistant or multicultural assistant? The prospective staff night at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Bovee University Center's Rotunda will provide information about the various residence halls, hall directors and communities. The meeting will explain the RA/MA application process and provide a timeline for applicants.

Relay for Life
Students looking to get involved with CMU's Relay For Life can check out the table decked in purple in the Lower Level of the UC Wednesday and the Park Library hallway Thursday. The table will be up 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days to inform students of the 24-hour walk to benefit cancer research. The walk will take place Feb. 16-17.
