Classes will resume Wednesday
Issue date: 1/7/08 Section: News
Power was restored on the campus of Central Michigan University at about 6:20 p.m. Tuesday.
The outage caused the cancellation of classes. All buildings on campus are closed.
Campus will reopen Wednesday and classes will resume.
A fire caused by lightning at a substation on Summerton Road during the Monday night storms caused the power outage, Smith said.
"The problem with the transformer is much worse than orginally thought," said Steve Smith, director of media relations.
People can call the emergency hotline at 989-774-7500 for more information.
Mary Gust, a spokesperson for Consumer's Energy, said the lightening strike took place at 8:37 p.m. Monday.
Gust said 10,800 customers in Isabella County were affected.
The campus power outage began at about 9:15 p.m. Monday, after several thunderstorms ripped through Mount Pleasant.
Weather conditions, which included gusty winds and hail, also led to power outages around other parts of the city.
Monday night's storms were a rarity for this time of year, said Wayne Hoepner, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.
Hoepner said weather officials were paying close attention to the storms, but did not expect the weather to reach Michigan.
"We can have these kinds of warm breaks, but usually the thunderstorms don't get quite this far north," Hoepner said. "We're looking for them mainly in Indiana and Illinois, but they just happened to make it farther north."
Hoepner said storms should clear out tonight, but light snow is a possible.
