The club hockey team dropped a pair of games during the weekend to Division I Eastern Michigan, extending its losing streak to a season-high six games.
On Saturday, Eastern topped Central, 5-1, after a 7-6 comeback win on Friday.
"We can take some good things out of this," said coach Chris LaPan. "We can learn from it because in March we'll be facing teams of this caliber."
After starting the season 10-3, the team has lost six consecutive games. However, every team Central has lost to has either been in the top five in Division II or a Division I team. The team knows it is simplicity that will take them out of their drought.
"I think it's a matter of getting back to the basics and just trying to pound them when they have the puck and try to pound it in when we have the puck," LaPan said.
No. 5 Central (10-9) shouldn't be too hurt by the losses in the rankings because EMU is 17-8 at the Division I level.
On Saturday, EMU dominated CMU in the first period, scoring with 9 minutes, 40 seconds in the game.
In the second, EMU took a 2-0 lead, scoring off a rebound. Sophomore Jordan Jakubik put Central on the board with 7:52 left in the period off a pass from senior Craig Lipar on the power play.
The following shift, CMU applied some pressure, but a turnover led to a 3-1 EMU lead exactly one minute after CMU brought the game within one.
EMU added two more goals in the third period for the 5-1 win.
In the first period on Friday, the teams traded goals, ending the period tied at 2. Scoring for Central were junior Marty Lipar assisted by Jakubik, and Lipar and Jakubik scoring unassisted.
In the second, the teams again each scored two goals. Jakubik added another goal from Marty Lipar and sophomore Ian Carlson slammed home a shot by junior Greg Martin.
CMU took a two-goal lead midway through the third period with Martin and Carlson each scoring. EMU, however, responded with three unanswered goals, the last one coming with just 1:27 remaining to take the first game of the two-game series.
"The third period was the most even," said Craig Lipar. "But on the score sheet that definitely wasn't the case."
The team plays Delta University at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the semifinal of the Saginaw Spirit Tournament in the Dow Event Center.
