Coach Sue Guevara said her team has improved dramatically since going 2-4 in November.

And it showed Thursday, as the women's basketball team stood toe-to-toe with a member of the Southeastern Conference in an 81-70 overtime loss to the University of Mississippi.

Central was able to rebound after trailing early in the game, but it wasn't enough as the team was outscored 16-5 in overtime in Oxford, Miss.

"This was a hard fought game," Guevara said. "We really sustained their run early."

With 12 seconds left, CMU gained possession, down by three points. Shonda Long's 3-pointer off an assist by Candace Wilson with two seconds remaining forced overtime.

Guevara had anticipated the Rebels' eagerness of coming out and getting an early lead because the Rebels were coming off a three-game losing streak. The Rebels' fast start put Central at an early disadvantage as Ole Miss started the game on an 8-0 run.

But the Chippewas made up enough ground to take the game into halftime down only three, 32-29. The team came out of the locker room determined to win the second half, and it did - outscoring the Rebels 36-33.

Long went 3-for-9 from 3-point range, but her last shot gave CMU (4-9 overall) a chance for the upset.

"I in-bounded the ball to Candace (Wilson) who took it up and I trailed behind her," Long said. "I hung out for it and called for it and just caught and shot it. It was good - I was excited."

Long finished the game with 13 points on 5-for-15 shooting in 37 minutes. She also led the CMU with seven rebounds.

Senior guard Stacey Verhoff led the team with 18 points and sophomore forward Britni Houghton finished with 11 points and six rebounds.

Junior guard Angel Chan added 15 points in 27 minutes off the bench while committing only one turnover, something she has struggled with in past games.

Guevara said the extra momentum from the game could motivate the team during its upcoming Mid-American Conference schedule.
