While the majority of CMU was enjoying its last days of vacation, the wrestling team was hard at work.

Central traveled to Hempstead, N.Y., on Sunday to face No. 16 Hofstra and 13th-ranked Edinboro.

CMU once again counted on its upper weights to secure a 22-14 victory over Hofstra in the morning dual. The Chippewas got off to a rough start, dropping their first three matches.

Luke Smith lost by major decision - 11-1 - to David Tomasette in the 125-pound weight class.

"Tomasette is very good," said coach Tom Borrelli. "Luke didn't wrestle a real good match, but we'll get him back going."

Senior Brandon Carter helped to turn the tide and got CMU on the scoreboard with an 8-1 decision against Mitch Smith at 149 pounds.

Senior Brandon Sinnott secured a overtime victory at 174 pounds and his brother Christian won a major decision against Hoftra's Justin Danz, 17-4.

Fifth-ranked Bubba Gritter sealed the CMU win by pinning Thomas Daddino, although Gritter said it may not have actually happened.

"I was looking for a reversal and his back was exposed to the mat," Gritter said. "I don't think he was totally pinned, but the ref called it, so I'll take it."

CMU put its No. 5 ranking on the line again in the afternoon against Edinboro. The Chippewas were carried by the top four weight classes and got a 28-11 win.

Smith stumbled early, losing 3-1 in overtime to Eric Morrill. Borrelli said the earlier loss may have still been on Smith's mind.

The rest of the Chippewas picked Smith up, however.

Conor Beebe earned a 9-3 decision at 133 pounds and Eric Kruger won a 10-2 major decision against Ryan Morgan in the 141-pound weight class.

CMU again swept the last four matches with two decisions and two pins.

Both Brandon and Christian Sinnott won decisions to maintain their No. 3 ranking in the 174- and 184-pound weight classes, respectively.

At 197 pounds, Wynn Michalak pinned Edinboro's Patrick Bradshaw just 56 seconds into the match.
