Former CMU football player De'Onte C. Burnam was sentenced Nov. 19 to seven months in prison and to three years of probation.

His license also was suspended for one year with no restricted license for the first 60 days.

Burnam could have faced up to 40 years in prison and/or a $50,000 fine for delivering and manufacturing cocaine and other charges, according to court documents.

The CMU senior defensive lineman was charged on Oct. 4, 2007, and faces the stiff penalties because of prior convictions. Officials from the Bay Area Narcotics Enforcement Team arrested Burnam on Oct. 3 after law enforcement officials seized cocaine from an apartment on East Gaylord Street in Mount Pleasant.

Burnam was arraigned on Oct. 4 on a felony count of delivering and manufacturing cocaine, as well as one count of assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer, also considered a felony.

He was dismissed from the football team for conduct detrimental to the program, according to a press release Athletics Director Dave Heeke issued that day.

"He had been serving a suspension from the team since the fall of 2006 for a violation of team rules," the press release said. "His suspension was set to lapse on Oct. 14, 2007, and his status with the program was up for review at that time. As part of the suspension process, he was permitted to return to practice on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2007."

Earlier this year, Burnam was arraigned on charges of delivering and manufacturing marijuana, also a felony charge punishable by up to four years in prison and/or a $20,000 fine.

Burnam's criminal history includes two misdemeanors for marijuana possession, according to documents.
