Fall 2007 freshmen are paying $304 per credit hour rather than the $251 rate set for freshmen in 2006 - a 21.1 percent increase.

The Board of Trustees approved the decision on July 12, as opposed to one other option, which would have increased tuition by 23.1 percent at $309 per credit hour.

The increase applied only to the freshmen class because of the CMU Promise, which guarantees a fixed tuition rate over five years. Interim Vice President of Finances and Administrative Services Barrie Wilkes said the increase amounts to 4.2 percent, the lowest among five universities that set tuition rates at the time for the following year.

However, because of uncertainty involving a delayed $7.4 million payment by state legislators, the increase applied only to freshmen and transfer students who began during the fall semester.

Board Chair Jeff Caponigro said the trustees will decide the tuition rate for incoming spring freshmen during their December meeting.

Trustees also approved an increase in tuition for graduate students from $366 per credit hour to $388 and for doctoral students from $416 to $441.

A May 25 budget deal signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm included $97 million in cuts or delayed payments to higher education.

CMU lost $1.39 million in state appropriations with another $7.4 million delayed until Oct. 1, 2007, the beginning of the state's fiscal year.

The looming $1.6 billion deficit for the 2007-08 fiscal year may be causing the uncertainty involving CMU's delayed payment.
