CMU's Pre Physical Therapy Club is trying to fulfill a young girl's dream to visit Alaska's inside passage.

The group is sponsoring a spaghetti dinner at 5 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Parish Hall to raise money for Hannah Simons-Scalise, a junior at Mount Pleasant High School who was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma, a type of bone cancer.

"She's a very cool kid, it's the main reason we did this", said Mount Pleasant graduate assistant Sally Engler, who has been in charge of putting together the fundraiser. "She is very active."

The hall is located at 209 S Franklin St.

Engler said Simons-Scalise still is in school and has participated in the cross country team and even ran in meets.

Simons-Scalise's family is grateful for the group's work.

"It's a very good thing they decided to do this" said Hannah's father, John Scalise. "It's given her the opportunity to do something she really wanted to do."

This wasn't been the first time cancer struck the family: Simons-Scalise's older sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 10. Now, 21 years old, she is healthy.

Simons-Scalise was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma in April 2006. She went into remission for 7 months, and had to go through chemotherapy.

Ewing's Sarcoma, medically known as Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor, is a rare disease that affects the bone or soft tissues of the body, namely the pelvis, the femur, the humerus (arm bone) and the ribs. It's most common among male teenagers, and clinical studies show that it develops during the formative years and peaks between 10 and 20 years of age.

The benefit will give attendees a chance to eat and win prizes, but it also allows them to help out Simons-Scalise and her family, organizers said.

"The benefit is for a good cause," said Ionia sophomore Tim Rowley, a member of the club.

The spaghetti dinner will cost $6 a person, with raffle tickets costing $2 each.

Students wishing to donate for Simon-Scalise's cause also can contact Sally Engler at engle2sa@cmich.edu or 621-4056.
