False alarm
MPFD alerted
to burnt out
ventilator motor
A ventilator motor overheated and burnt out Tuesday night in the stairwell at Bush Theatre in Moore Hall. The Mount Pleasant Fire Department arrived around 7 p.m. After Central Michigan University Police pinpointed the stairwell for the smell, the firefighters searched three floors to find the problem.
"I knew it was something electrical burning," said fire department Sgt. Michael Dunham. "Each kind of electronic fire gives off a distinct odor. This smelled like light ballast or a motor, and there were only four of those in the stairwell."
The hallway adjacent to the stairwell filled with fog, said Ann Dasen, theater costumes coordinator and 9-1-1 caller.
Electrician Ken Turnwald and Maintenance Manager Jim Waters, of Facilities Management, were called in to check out the defunct motor. Waters said the average life span for a motor is at least five years. He said the motor only becomes a problem when it happens on the night shift.
"Normally, this happens during the daytime, so it's not a problem," Waters said. "We're not going to change this motor out until the morning, if we have another motor."
Speaker Series
Committee will
narrow field today
The Central Michigan University Speaker Series Search Committee is planning to finalize the list of possible candidates to speak on campus during a closed meeting today. John Fierst, Clarke Historical Library assistant professor and Speaker Series chairman, said the discussion will focus on prioritizing the possible candidates for Speaker Series. "Everyone in the committee will have a final say," he said. The list of final candidates will then be sent to University Events Director Bob Ebner. University Events will attempt to contact the candidates to determine who will come to speak on campus. The Speaker Series was revitalized last semester when University President Michael Rao allocated $20,000 for a speaker for the second year in a row.
