PR Central and the Michigan Humane Society reached out to dessert and animal lovers alike Tuesday night.
A fundraiser at Cold Stone Creamery, 2330 S. Mission St. cq, is just one event in the seven week long Collegiate Telethon Challenge to raise money for the MHS, said Amy LeMieux, Alpena senior and account executive for PR Central.
"Our goal is $5000, but obviously the bigger, the better," she said. "The sky is the limit."
Stephanie Baron, CMU alumna and Humane Society employee, said this is the second annual Collegiate Telethon Challenge. This year, Central competes against Eastern Michigan University, Oakland University and Grand Valley State University.
Each school was challenged to raise $5,000, Baron said.
For every student who mentioned "PR Central" or "The Humane Society", Coldstone donated 20 percent of the proceeds. As of Tuesday night, organizers did not have an official total calculated.
"As long as people keep coming in and mentioning the cause, I think we'll do OK," LeMieux said.
Cold Stone patron Chris Ogozaly of Mount Pleasant said the Humane Society is a cause he supports.
"My wife and I are both big animal lovers," he said. "Anytime you can help out a pet it's great to do."
None of the funds benefit CMU, LeMieux said, but all donations will help PR Central reach its goal.
Proceeds directly benefit three shelters in the Detroit area and help cover vaccines, food and vet bills, she said.
"Not only does it keep animals safe in the shelter, it keeps them out of the shelter as well."
Baron said the Collegiate Challenge events lead up to the annual telethon. The telethon, which takes place on Valentine's Day, is the biggest fundraising event of the year, she said.
