Those wishing to pay their respects to Leonard Plachta can do so this weekend.

The man responsible for leading CMU from 1992 to 2000 will be remembered at 2 p.m. Sunday in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium.

"I think it's important for us to have an opportunity to gather and pay tribute," said Mary Jane Flanagan, executive assistant to University President Rao.

Plachta died Jan. 22 at age 78.

CMU also has set up the Leonard E. Plachta Auditorium Fund.

Flanagan said Sunday's event will include several speakers, music and a photo montage.

The event is open to anyone from the university or community who wishes to pay tribute to him, Flanagan said.

"It's going to be fairly dignified but fairly simple," she said.

The memorial fund is a second option for those who wish to pay their respects to CMU's former president.

Donated funds will be put into an account and will be used for general support of the auditorium, said Vice President of Development and Alumni Relations Mike Leto.

Leto said the fund will support the maintenance of Plachta Auditorium with excess funds possibly used for funding programming.

"I've received many calls and e-mails from individuals wanting to know how they can make a contribution in Leonard's memory," he said. "There's a great deal of interest out there."

Plachta, who came to CMU in 1971 as a visiting professor of accounting, joined the faculty in 1972. He served as assistant dean and dean of the College of Business Administration prior to assuming the presidency at CMU in 1992 as interim president before taking over full-time in 1993.

Warriner Auditorium was renamed after Plachta and his wife Louise in 2000.

"We'd like to let those folks know if they would like to support the university in honor of Leonard Plachta, this fund has been set up," Leto said.
