A late three-goal rally was not enough for the club hockey team Thursday as it lost 7-6 to Denver in the final 34 seconds.

CMU scored with 1 minute, 34 seconds left to cap a three-goal comeback.

But one minute later, a Denver player skated in and scored on a top glove side shot. The goal gave Denver the lead and ended CMU's hopes for a comeback victory.

"They wanted to win that game," said coach Chris LaPan. "They were out there to win, but then we got lax at the end, started playing for overtime."

Central now has given up at least four goals in every game since Nov. 17.

"We've been giving up six, seven goals every game since November," said senior captain Craig Lipar. "Apparently we're not progressing as team defensively; it's more of a regression."

Denver had the only goal in the first period on a power play with 6:32 remaining.

Denver then led off the scoring in the second period when Central turned over the puck in front of the net and a DU player was able to capitalize.

"We just seem to always start with a two- or three-goal deficit. It's real frustrating," Lipar said.

Sophomore Mike Lesnau brought CMU within one goal when he scored with 9:11 left in the second period after taking a pass and sliding a quick shot underneath the fooled goaltender.

Sophomore Jordan Jakubik tied the game just more than a minute later with 8:03 remaining.Jakubik beat a Denver defender to the puck and came in on a short breakaway and snuck the puck past the goaltender.

Denver then took back the lead with 24 seconds remaining in the period, just as a CMU penalty expired.

Denver went up 4-2 just 27 seconds into the third period on a quick pass from the side of the net that was smoothly deflected in.

But Central answered back 15 seconds later when Jordan Jakubik scored his second goal of the game to make it 4-3.
