The women's track team gets a chance to repeat as champions in the Bowling Green/Toledo Triangular tonight in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Field events start at 5 p.m. and running events start at 6 p.m.
This year's lineup also features Ohio University. Coupled with that and the improvements made by the other teams, coach Karen Lutzke said repeating will not be easy.
"We're not just going to be able walk in there and run away with it," Lutzke said.
The Chippewas won the event last season at home with 147 points, followed by Bowling Green with 109.5 and Toledo with 58.5.
Several current team members had success in last year's event.
Senior middle distance runner Jenaie Edwards won the 800-meter run, sophomore jumper Erika Schroll took first in the high jump, senior sprinter Tempestt Stanford took second in the 60m dash, sophomore sprinter Stephanie Byrne took second in the 200m dash, sophomore sprinter Cara Dukes placed fourth in the 200m dash and junior distance runner Libby Carpenter placed third in the mile.
"It's always a good thing to go into a meet where you've had previous success," Edwards said. "Even to run on the track where you've had previous success is also a good thing. My sophomore year we had the MAC Championship meet there and a few girls competed and they did very well."
The meet will be the team's first competing solely against Mid-American Conference schools. The team did face WMU and EMU at last weekend's Michigan Intercollegiates, however. Western beat Central by just 15 points and finished ahead of Eastern by 44 points.
Edwards said it's important to evaluate other MAC teams before the Indoor Championships.
"It's a real good indicator of what we can do against these three schools," Edwards said. "We faced Western this past weekend and got to see what they're about, and now we get to see what three other schools are about."
Motivation should not be a problem, Edwards said, because CMU always looks forward to competing against schools standing in front of it and a championship.
"I think that alone, just thinking about the MAC Championship meet will be the thing that really gets it all going," she said.
The team travels next weekend to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Tyson Invitational.
