Students and alumni can explore job options and meet with representatives from several companies at the Alpha Kappa Psi Career Day on Wednesday.
The co-ed fraternity, Career Services and the College of Business Administration are sponsoring the bi-annual event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Finch Fieldhouse.
Vivian Como, assistant director of Career Services, said there will be tables set up for each company to conduct short meetings with students. These meetings will serve an introductory purpose only - many businesses will select viable candidates for full on-campus interviews in the coming weeks.
"It is a great opportunity for freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors to get first hand information about companies, introduce themselves and network, and practice good communication skills," Como said.
Prior registration or appointments are not required and opportunities may be available for both internships and entry-level job positions. The event offers benefits for all students, no matter what academic year they may be in, Como said.
Attendees should come outfitted in professional attire and should have several copies of their résumé on hand, she said.
Como recommends students look over the list of participating companies at careers.cmich.edu prior to attending Career Day in order to make the event as worthwhile as possible.
"Develop a strategy for the day and research to decide who to visit with," Como said.
Como advises coming with a short introduction in mind about concepts such as educational background and aspirations in order to initiate conversation with potential employers.
"It is possible to make as many as 25-30 contacts in several short meetings," Como said.
The Alpha Kappa Psi Career Day is hosted near the beginning of both the fall and spring semesters each year.
Brian Partie, internship coordinator for Career Services and faculty adviser for Alpha Kappa Psi, said attendance generally is higher in the spring with an estimated 1,000 to 1,200 students participating.
As of Friday, 86 companies representing a variety of career fields were expected to attend this week's event.
"It is a huge networking opportunity and a great way to connect with companies and get information," Partie said.
