Club hockey drops two more games

A recent trend continued for the club hockey team at Western Michigan.
Unfortunately, the trend is giving up at least seven goals per game.
Central lost twice this weekend to Division I Western. It lost 8-2 on Saturday and 9-1 on Friday. The two losses marked the sixth consecutive game in which CMU has given up at least seven goals.
"Our mentality is just not there," said junior defenseman Andrew Anson. "We are not playing as a team at all this second half of the season and I don't know what it is ... It's extremely frustrating."
On Saturday, Western and Central traded goals in the first period. WMU took the lead with 5 minutes, 10 seconds remaining in the period, but CMU tied the score when sophomore Jordan Jakubik scored from sophomores Mike Lesnau and Zach Krieger.
WMU scored seven straight goals in the second and third periods.
CMU freshman Nick Kent scored his first goal of the season from Jakubik.
"We were with them all the way. We were pressuring them; we were playing well," Anson said. "And then second period comes out and we were a totally different team and they capitalized."
On Friday, CMU held WMU to only one goal in the first 20 minutes. However, much like Saturday, Western took control in the second and third periods, scoring eight of the last nine goals. Lesnau scored CMU's lone goal of the game with 11:59 left in the third period. Freshman goaltender James Bowen stopped 41 shots in his first start of the year.
"We just gave up. There's no passion - no heart anymore," Anson said. "We're just going through the motions."
The two losses, coupled with Thursday's 7-6 loss to Denver, means CMU will be heading to the Feb. 22 and 23 regionals in Chicago on a three-game losing streak. The team has won only two games since Nov. 18.
CMU currently is ranked seventh, which means it would face No. 6 DePaul in the opening round of regionals. Teams ranked third through 10th in Friday's final rankings will compete in a playoff to decide the final two bids for nationals. The top two teams in each region receive automatic bids to nationals in Fort Myers, Fla.
Central faced DePaul in the second week of the season. CMU won the first game 5-2 and DePaul won the second 6-5. With a win, the team could face Michigan State or Michigan in the next round of regionals.
Senior captain Craig Lipar said he is confident CMU can make it despite the tough competition that awaits.
"We beat Michigan State once this year. We beat Michigan already this year. DePaul we split this year," Lipar said. "So all the teams that we've played that are in regionals we have at least one win against."
