The Cultural Student Council is trying to bring together cultural groups on campus and communicate with one another more proficiently.

"The purpose (of the council) is to improve communication between cultural groups on campus, in an effort to increase membership, and participation at events," said Clarence Richardson, a Milan senior, Cultural Student Council chair and second vice president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Representatives from numerous groups on campus attended the newly-formed council's first meeting Tuesday in Bovee University Center, including the Collective Action for Cultural Unity, Sacrifice Magazine, the North American Indigenous Student Organization and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

"The forming of this council is for a positive purpose," said Kierre Majors, a Detroit senior and member of Delta Sigma Theta. "I believe it can be very successful."

About 30 students discussed their constitution articles and upcoming events and plans for different groups.

Saginaw senior Jennifer Scott, NAACP first vice president, said she felt the organizations came together well.

"This meeting was a complete success. I'm very happy with the turnout," she said.

The next monthly meeting will be 8 p.m. March 11. The group hopes to use the Bovee University Center Auditorium.

"I believe (the council) will help to get everyone informed and get everyone involved on campus," Scott said.

Richardson, along with the NAACP, formed the council for anyone in any cultural student organization to join and share ideas.

"I organized it as a program for NAACP," Richardson said.

After the meeting, Richardson said the council's adviser will be Denise Green, associate vice president for institutional diversity.
