Bay City senior Kyle Cozad is jazzed for a music-filled weekend.
The gala concert for CMU's 35th annual Jazz Weekend will feature guest artists Terri Lynn Carrington and Bill Carrothers.
"(Carrington) has a tons of experience and (Carrothers) is from Michigan so it will be a nice way to showcase Michigan talent," Cozad said.
Carrington has been a world-renowned drummer, composer and producer. Carrothers is a as a professional pianist who has toured Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Both artists have been playing for over 20 years.
"They tour all over the world," Cozad said. "It's something special that they are here with our students and faculty."
Jazz Weekend starts Thursday with the CMU Jazz Faculty CD Release Concert.
"This will be a fabulous opportunity," Cozad said. "We have great talent here in Mount Pleasant."
The jazz faculty will be playing eight "cuts" from the "Caught in the Act" CD, said John Jacobson, Director of Music Events. The concert is free and CDs will be on sale at the concert.
On Friday, 50 high school jazz bands from all over the state, will come together and perform on campus, Cozad said.
Jazz weekend coordinator Denver Laabs, a Northville senior, said the event will be especially beneficial for the students who get to perform.
"This will be an awesome experience for the high school students that get to play," he said. "Playing for strangers, not just parents, gives you a rush that you haven't gotten before. It gives them publicity."
There will also be multiple CMU student groups performing from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. All of these events will be free.
"It's a good way to support the CMU student musicians who have worked hard," Cozad said.
Laabs said the CMU musicians practice five times a week.
"There's going to be awesome music," Laabs said. "They're polished groups."
The gala concert will be at 8 p.m. on Friday. The Jazz Lab I, directed by Rob Smith, and the CMU Jazz Faculty will perform with the guest artists. It will be about a two hour show.
"We will have a custom light show," Laabs said. "It's something new for us and we're excited about that."
The cost is $7 for students and $10 for everyone else.
Tickets can be bought at the door or by calling the University Box Office.
