Rescue truck, 17 firefighters respond to call

The Mount Pleasant Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 9:15 a.m. Monday at 1864 Airway Dr. The contents of an un-attached garage and the building itself were on fire. The fire started at the rear of the structure and spread throughout. Three fire engines, one rescue truck and 17 firefighters responded to the incident and had the fire under control by 10 a.m. No injuries were reported. The fire caused severe damage to the structure and its contents. Investigators determined the fire started during an attempt to thaw a frozen pipe. The heat source used to thaw the pipe was too close to combustibles, causing a fire to start.

Sheriff's Department investigates collision

Two men were injured in a two-car collision at 1:24 p.m. Monday on M-20 near Chippewa Road. A 1996 Oldsmobile Ciera driven by Mount Pleasant resident Chad A. Mead, 17, was traveling eastbound on M-20 and in an attempt to make a left turn pulled out in front of a 2006 GMC Savana traveling westbound on M-20. The mini-van, driven by Birch Run resident Matthew M. Letterman, 28, hit the other vehicle broadside. A FlightCare helicopter took Mead to St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw for a possible hip injury. Joshua A. Swan, a 29-year old Mount Pleasant resident who was a passenger in Mead's vehicle, was flown to the same hospital for internal injuries and pain in an elbow. Members of the Shepherd Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extricate Swan from the car. All the individuals involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts. It is unknown whether alcohol or drugs were a factor. The accident is being investigated by the Isabella County Sheriff's Department.
