Students want to see a post office, more study rooms and a better overall hangout atmosphere at the Bovee University Center.
Those were some of the features students recommended to SHW Group architect Patrick Calhoun, who spoke about future renovation plans for the UC at Monday's Student Government Association meeting.
Muskegon senior Jesse Vance recommended making the lobby more interactive.
"There should be a lobby with couches and chairs that are bigger than what there is now so students can talk," he said.
The current allotted budget for the project is $5 million.
The renovation process would take at least three years, Vance said. He said there is a possibility the UC would eventually shut down completely, but said this would most likely take place in the summer.
Calhoun listed the UC as a hearthstone on campus, so changes made should only enhance its image. He also said there needs to be more space for students, and the building should integrate student functions like studying, eating and technology.
"Technology there should be available all the time like electricity, light or air," Calhoun said.
Students said adding a post office and changing parking would make the UC better, as well as study spaces that allowed food and beverage, unlike 0Charles V. Park Library.
Flat Rock sophomore Andrew Hickman suggested having student art displayed more prominently to give it a better platform.
Calhoun discussed the possibility of moving administrative offices and offices least used by students out of the UC to create space for more student-friendly rooms.
Midland senior Steven Swantek asked where they would go.
"I'm not sure yet, but anybody we move out will stay in that part of campus," Calhoun said.
Calhoun said students' ideas are welcome because it is easier to make changes in plans now rather then during renovation.
