The women's basketball team returns at 7 p.m. today against Bowling Green at Rose Arena with the same starters that were effective in CMU's first Mid-American Conference win.
CMU's 87-70 overtime win at Kent State on Saturday snapped its 10-game losing streak. The four guards who each scored in double digits will get another chance to lead to the team to victory.
Coach Sue Guevara said she could not remember the last time that happened.
Today's game will be the third consecutive guard-heavy starting lineup. The experiment began in CMU's two-point loss to Miami on Feb. 2.
"That lineup offers a lot of different things defensively," Guevara said.
Central (5-18 overall, 1-9 MAC) looks to utilize the quickness of the guards to keep Bowling Green's top two guards from controlling the game.
"We have to come out physical," said junior guard Angel Chan. "We have a good game plan. They do have a shooter and like to shoot and penetrate. We just have to play solid D."
The first-place Falcons run their offense through freshman Lauren Prochaska and senior Kate Achter in the backcourt. The pair rank fifth and sixth in MAC scoring with 14.6 and 13.7 points per game, respectively.
Bowling Green (17-6, 6-3 MAC) also averages 71.5 points as a team, first in the MAC, and boasts the largest margin of victory, winning its games by an average of 11.5 points.
CMU's starting lineup also gives it options on offense.
"Penetrate and shoot, catch and shoot," Chan said. "It's nothing different than what we've been doing."
Sophomore forward Britni Houghton may be able to exercise her will down low as BGSU lacks a dominate post presence.
Bowling Green's leading rebounder is Prochaska, a guard, who averages 5.4 per game.
Battling Cancer
In today's game, both teams along with the rest of the MAC and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association will participate in the "Think Pink" program to battle and bring awareness to breast cancer. The WBCA's program will send all proceeds to breast cancer foundations.
This is something close to Guevara, who lost a family member to cancer.
"It's the WBCA's initiative for the month," she said. "It's a great, great cause."
The coaches will promote the initiative by wearing pink shirts and shoes. The players plan to wear pink shoelaces during the game.
The CMU Athletics Department also will conduct raffles with chances to win pink basketballs and bracelets.
CHAN PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Chan was named the MAC West's Player of the Week for her efforts in the team's first conference win.
Chan scored 25 points, including 15 in overtime. She was five-of-seven in three pointers, with three coming in the extra frame.
