An East Lansing beverage franchise will be bringing its flavor to Mount Pleasant when Biggby Coffee opens its doors Tuesday.

The opening of the Mount Pleasant store, located at 4445 E. Bluegrass Road, originally was planned for December, but has been pushed back several times.

"Obtaining the equipment would be the only reason we've been running a little bit behind," said store owner Mike Densmore, adding that all equipment and furnishings are installed and ready for Tuesday. "Basically everything's coming along great."

Densmore said employee training ran last week and ended Friday.

Biggby will have special prices for a different drink each day this week and will offer free short cups of brewed coffee all week.

The Biggby store will offer a Wi-Fi Internet connection and drive-thru service. Densmore said the coffee shop's environment will draw in customers.

"I promise you the atmosphere will be second to none," he said.

Despite all the opening-week deals and other drawing points, the coffee shop's greatest detriment may be its location, said Brigitte Cripe.

"I think it's (the week of special deals) a great way to get customers in, but I'm not going to go all the way down Bluegrass (Road) to get a free cup of coffee," the Dexter junior said.

Berrien Springs sophomore Nick Stephenson said there are coffee shops on and right around campus, so he doesn't see many times he'll make the trip to Biggby Coffee.

"Maybe if I was going to Wal-Mart or something I'd stop there on the way back, but other than that I wouldn't go," Stephenson said.

Biggby first began business as Beaner's Gourmet Coffee in East Lansing in 1995. The company officially changed its name to Biggby Coffee on Sept. 15 because of concerns that the term "beaner" is disparaging toward Latinos.

As an avowed coffee snob, I've got to give it to these guys for making a good cup of coffee - almost as good as Tim Horton's. Starbucks is not good coffee -- its only strong and expensive. (Continued…)

Eric,

You are spot on with your comment about the name change!

As for the coffee, I believe it is currently the best coffee in Mount Pleasant. (Continued…)

As a decendant of a Mexican immigrant, I have to say - there's nothing wrong with the name "Beaners." We're too politically correct today - and anybody could be offended by pretty much any name. (Continued…)
