Losing weight often can be done in a very unhealthy manner.

CMU students will have a chance to learn of better and healthier ways to stay fit during Eating Concerns Awareness Week

Ron Thompson, an Indiana University professor, will speak at 7 p.m. today in the Bovee University Center's Rotunda on the issues of eating concerns and disorders. The Student Dietetic Association-sponsored event is free.

"Dr. Thompson is going to be talking about healthy exercise," said SDA President and Otisville senior Aharon Roberts. "He will also be talking more specifically about eating disorders."

Many college students want to get fit and lose weight for spring break, Roberts said, yet few of them do it healthily.

"People are exercising really hard right now to get the spring break body," he said. "People need to realize they have to eat right and exercise properly to get fit."

Thompson will speak to students about the healthy habits that can have a positive effect on peoples' bodies. He also will talk about the negatives of eating concerns and teaching people more about eating concerns and disorders, Roberts said.

"I think people here have a generally good feel from eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia, but most probably don't know the technical definitions," Roberts said.

Thompson's speech will help people learn more, said Canton junior Renee Haworth.

"Eating disorders are something people don't talk about that much," she said. "It's good to raise awareness about eating disorders because there are probably more college students out there with eating disorders than we realize."

Roberts said he thinks students need to know the negatives of eating disorders, how to identify them and how to develop healthy eating habits.

Southfield junior Jessie Cahoon thinks having a speaker come to talk to students about eating concerns and disorders will greatly help everyone.

"It's a great way for students to be informed on healthy ways to lose those pounds for spring break without going to extremes," Cahoon said.
