The women's track team continued its progress toward the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday in the venue the meet will take place in.
The team competed in the Eastern Michigan Classic at Bob Parks Track, host of this year's MAC Indoor Championships. CMU captured one first-place, three second-places and four third-place finishes in a meet that lasted nearly 12 hours and featured nearly 900 athletes.
"It was a long day. … It was really hot in there, but it was good preparation us for the MAC meet because it's not going to be any different," said coach Karen Lutzke. "We know it's going to be hot. We know how crowded the facility is."
Senior sprinter Tempestt Stanford picked up the team's lone win in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 25.44 seconds. Stanford also finished second in the 60m in 7.67 seconds. Freshman Jordan Dunn finished third (7.72) and sophomore Cara Dukes finished sixth (7.85) in the event.
Also placing were freshman Reanne Lohner in the 800m, finishing second in 2:16.79, freshman Brittany Dixon placing third in the mile run (5:07.49) and the distance medley team finishing second (12:26.3). Freshman thrower Norianna Brown and sophomore Whitney Johnson each earned third places at the meet. Brown finished third in the shot put with a throw of 13.56 meters and Johnson finished third in the weight throw with a hurl of 17.19 meters.
"We had some solid performances," Lutzke said.
Bob Parks Track recently was resurfaced and the team saw it as an advantage to run on the track before the MAC Indoors in two weeks.
"It was nice because if you race somewhere, then you have a feel for how the track is and it's easier to visualize. … that was really beneficial," said junior distance runner Libby Carpenter.
The team hosts the Jack Skoog Open at 5 p.m. Friday at Jack Skoog Indoor Track. It is the team's first home meet since Jan. 11 when it hosted the Chippewa Open.
"I'm very excited because a lot more of the girls on the team get a chance to compete because it's a home meet," said senior Jenaie Edwards.
