From plain black to sparkly, over-the-top shoes, no two pairs are exactly alike.

Within the past couple seasons, shoe styles have transformed to become more daring. Stilettos have become thicker, taking them from thin sticks to wedge-style shoes.

"I've noticed that there are a lot of wedge high heels," said Saginaw junior Sarah Strudgeon, an apparel and merchandising design student. "A lot of high heels have ankle straps right now."

Many wedge high heels are made from cork and range in height. Some styles have peep toes, while others have ankle straps with holes in the middle of the heel. Wedge sling back high heels are another popular choice for spring and summer.

Wedges are best paired with shorts in the summer months because they elongate the leg line, perfect for petite women. They can be worn during the day or altered to become the perfect going out shoes for the evening.

Knee high riding boots have become this season's staple.

They can be paired with tucked in jeans, skirts or dresses, making them versatile yet dressy. The boots can either have a slight heel or be completely flat.

"I like flat high boots because they are comfortable and sassy," said Hudson senior Brittany Gorno. "As students, we walk everywhere and high heels aren't practical."

Jeans with tights underneath paired with flat boots are a trendy way to keep warm during the frigid winter months, Gorno said.

As for a night out, pairing flat boots with a vintage rock T-shirt and skinny jeans is an updated version of the classic jeans and T-shirt look. The popularity of Ugg boats have not lost their trend appeal, but are not always ideal for giving off a more professional appearance, where as leather boots do.

Ballet flats made their comeback last spring and still are common. Both Strudgeon and Gorno agree current ballet flats are more ornate, with brighter colors and patterns.

"Ballet flats are especially popular since designers are coming out with patterns and updating the shoe," said Livonia senior Sarah List.

Flats can be worn with jeans to be casual, while wearing them with a dress or skirt can create a more formal look. The style of shoe is also practical for walking around campus.

"Skinny jeans with flats are a must," Gorno said.
