After losing her mother to breast cancer last summer, Stephanie Martin just wants to educate.
Now, the Chesterfield Township sophomore is joining her teammates to raise money and awareness the best way they know how.
The CMU women's soccer team will be scrimmaging against three separate teams at the Central Michigan University Woman's Soccer Annual Alumni Weekend to raise money for breast cancer awareness.
Head coach Tony DiTucci said he is impressed with Martin's strength.
"It hits close to home when a tragedy happens to someone close to you," DiTucci said.
He said the team has gotten closer since the incident.
Martin, a forward, said she was touched when her teammates wanted to support her. Martin's mother, Laura, died June 28, 2007, at the age of 52, after fighting cancer for two years.
"She was sick towards the end, but she still came to every game," Martin said.
The CMU team will be playing the CMU women's alumni team at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Indoor Athletic Complex turf bay, the men's club soccer team at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and the Dixie Blaze Canadian team at 1:30 p.m. later that day.
Admission is free for spectators. Pink shirts displaying the ribbon for breast cancer awareness will be sold for $20.
"It's a little more costly for the shirts, but the money raised is going towards a good cause," DiTucci said.
Donations raised will go toward the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research and awareness.
"Last year the men's club team beat us, but the year before we beat them," DiTucci said.
Teammates Katy Boggan, a New York senior, and Kristen Pelkki, Saginaw sophomore, said they admire Martin's ability to stay strong after her mother's death.
Boggan said students need to be more aware of breast cancer.
"This is a growing problem and we (college students) are going to have to find a solution," Martin said. "Every donation will count."
