Professors and faculty are coming together to find ways to help benefit students through the CMU 2010 Vision Fund.

CMU currently has dedicated $4.3 million toward 28 previously proposed projects, while $500,000 to $700,000 still is available for future proposals.

And now, students and faculty can get involved in the process by visiting the Vision Fund planning Web site, where newsletters, past presentations and current proposals are posted.

"Put your idea up and see if anyone sparks an interest in your proposal," said Director of curriculum and assessment Denise Webster, insisting faculty and staff take advantage of this site. "It's a message board to post ideas and encourage collaboration across campus when face-to-face isn't possible."

Students can become part of the discussion board by going to planning.cmich.edu and entering in their global I.D.

Webster said she hopes the discussion of future goals will engage the entire campus as a whole.

During a fireside chat Monday, academic adviser Barbara L'Hommedieu discussed her proposal of having advisers be addressed four weeks into a semester if freshmen students are struggling in a class.

"We need to find ways to help them not bury themselves," L' Hommedieu said.

CMU currently does not alert students if they are beginning to fail a class.

"If there is perhaps a way through the Internet or Blackboard where ... faculty starts to see problems in students they could report it," L'Hommedieu said.

She said she hates to see freshmen demoralized by failing grades because it could set a negative tone for the rest of their experience.

Wesley Leonard, Health Professions application programmer, is seeking a budget through CMU 2010 to support Virtual Reality Central. CMU's virtual reality lab currently is funded by the College of Health Professions technology department.

"Our primary goal is to focus on research that can directly relate to the CMU 2010 institutional priority on research and creative activities," Leonard said.

Leonard said the virtual reality is a stimulated environment through computer application that any field of study could use.

The virtual reality lab consists of a motion capture, stereoscopic 3-D visualization and driving stimulator.

Webster encourages students to become involved as well.

"Have someone in your RSO group come and talk about your proposal or address it to the Student Government Association," she said.

More information will be released in April and proposals are due in October. Approved proposals will be announced in September 2009 and funding will begin July 1, 2009.
