Bitzer's winning past pays dividends at Central

For the last two seasons of Jordan Bitzer's high school basketball career, coach Mark Gainforth did little coaching. He didn't need to - Bitzer was a coach on the court. "Here's a guy who probably knew what was going to happen before the play ended, which put him a step ahead of everybody else," Gainforth said.

Marcus Van scored a career-high18 points and grabbed nine rebounds to give CMU confidence early in its 63-58 win Wednesday against Ball State at Rose Arena. Van used his height advantage to shoot multiple mid-range jumpers in the post against the smaller Cardinals.

Freshman sprinter gets things 'Dunn'

Consistency has been the trademark of Jordan Dunn's freshman season. The sprinter has not placed lower than fourth in any 60-meter dash. Coach Karen Lutzke said she has been that way since high school. "In high school she was consistent and now she's consistent," Lutzke said.

But the extent of the injuries that have developed this season has left him without many options. "We've seen it before, but not to this level, not to the depth that we're at right now," Reighard said.

A lack of defense has men's basketball coach Ernie Zeigler still searching for a set rotation near the end of the regular season. The Chippewas have four Mid-American Conference games remaining, including a 7 p.m. game today against Ball State at Rose Arena, but have yet to find the right mix of players defensively.

Stewart thriving after injury-plagued season

Trevor Stewart has experienced almost all of the ups and downs collegiate wrestling has to offer in just about one year. Coming off injury problems during the second half of last season, the junior 165-pounder headed into this year looking to come back strong as he took the place of All-American Mike Miller, who is taking an Olympic redshirt.

Monday, Feb. 19, 1979 A crowd of 6,437 people witnessed the men's basketball team move into a first place tie in the Mid-American Conference after beating Western 94-86 Saturday at Rose Arena. CMU (16-6 overall,10-2 MAC) outrebounded WMU and had 10 less turnovers.
