Cristina D'Aristotile compared improv group Baby Wants Candy's performances to those seen on the popular show, "Whose Line is it Anyway?"

"They can come up with the most random ways to twist a story around," the public relations manager for On the Fly Productions said. "You think in your head that it will play out one way, but it ends up being completely different."

Students will have a chance to see Baby Wants Candy perform a free show at 8 p.m. today in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium.

The group consists of five to 10 actors and musicians who do original performances - products of the group's spontaneous imagination.

The night will begin with the audience naming a random title for a never-before-seen musical. The first suggestion offered will become the basis for an entire show made up on the spot.

Gobles sophomore Lauren Lee learned about the performance through Facebook and posters in her residence hall. She said she plans on attending with several of her friends.

"I like improv comedy and musicals, so I think the combination will be entertaining and fun to see," Lee said.

Baby Wants Candy formed in 1997 and has performed more than 1,400 shows in cities such as Chicago and New York, according to the group's Web site.

Members can work with any topic, and if a word suggested by the audience is unfamiliar, group members will create their own definition.

Some examples of past musical titles are "Murder on the Shakespearean Loveboat," "The Avocado Rebellion" and "Austin Powers In the Land of Oz."

On the Fly Productions, which will sponsor today's event, first saw the team at the National Association for Campus Activities, a conference it attends twice each year.

"We absolutely loved (Baby Wants Candy) and decided to book them right away," D'Aristotile said.

She found it amazing how the cast could create a whole group of song titles and lyrics right there in front of an audience.

"It's going to be sweet," Lee said.
