What classifies getting old?

I'm turning 22 soon - in less than a week, actually.

Am I old yet?

In the past my birthday has consisted of week-long events and complaints of "Why should I go to class? It's my birthday!" I learned quickly that my birthday isn't a good enough reason to take a day off of classes.

Especially this year. With an exam not only on my birthday but also the day before and after, I'm staying in.

When I turned 21, a party and bar outing were planned well in advance.

This year I keep answering the same way to that great question: "What are you doing for your birthday?" My response? I have no idea.

Honestly, I'm just not interested in going out for my birthday. I have had the past year to do the bar scene and hang with friends. This year I think I might work on purpose.

I've come to the conclusion that after a person turns 21, there aren't many birthdays left to really throw a party about. I might get excited at 25, or depressed if I'm still career-less and living in an apartment with just a dog.

And let's face it, you reach 30 wondering what happened to the last 10 years and then 40 wondering what happened to the last 20. Call me pessimistic but I'm not really looking forward to it.

I spent most of middle and high school pushing my age, trying to look older, wanting to be older and only to find that after you actually get there you want to go back a little.

Not to mention, I still look like I'm 12 (OK, maybe 16). So, going back wouldn't be too hard, would it?

Every now and then I take a look around and feel happy to be my age and getting older. It's nice to be in college, on your own and able to come in the front door whenever you want.

I may change my mind between now and my actual birthday, especially with friends saying, "You have to go out for your birthday it's not like you're old."

But, for now, a visit home to my family and my dog is the best gift I can get.

So yeah, you kinda took part of my quote...but definitely left it vague enough that I believe enough people told you the same thing that you just clumped it all together. (Continued…)
