These regulations also are designed to ensure that athletes are not falling behind on schoolwork to keep up with team requirements. The track team has maintained this balance of school and sports so far this year, and the team grade-point average was 3.06 in the fall semester.

Deb McAlpin, academic adviser for athletics, works with the track team to keep them from falling behind academically.

"I ask them when I have my meetings with them, 'How can you be academically successful in college? What is the No. 1 thing to do?' And they better tell me, 'Go to class,'" she said. "And if they don't, I tell them that's the answer and they better know it the next time I ask them."

Fortin understands the importance of keeping up grades in order to stay eligible and has maintained a cumulative GPA above 3.0. He credits his academic success to staying on top of his assignments and using the resources available to him.

"The fellows on the track team are great to work with - there are a great bunch of young men there," McAlpin said.
