More than 400 people showed up Saturday to help James Ronald Williams raise money to fund his medical bill.

Williams, 23, and his family hosted an auction at Sacred Heart Parish Center, 302 S. Kinney Blvd.

Williams was beaten on New Year's Day outside of O'Kellys Sports Bar and Grill, 2000 S. Mission St., and ended up with a medical tab of $200,000.

"I heard the story in detail and I wanted to help," said Wisconsin sophomore Molly McCrumb. "It was a horrible thing that happened and it can happen to anyone."

Local businesses also contributed to the auction. More than 200 businesses and people were acknowledged on Williams' donor list.

"There's a lot to pay for and anything will help," McCrumb said. "I think the auction items are a hit."

There were both live and silent auctions which included Detroit Pistons tickets, 10-day ski passes to various Michigan resorts, Red Wings tickets, a stainless steel refrigerator and much more.

Williams' grandfather Tom Kriegish said the event was as successful as they had hoped.

"It's kind of hard to predict what will happen, but we are hoping that more people will show up later," Kriegish said.

Jazz band 2nd Sunday kept guests entertained.

Guests also enjoyed a buffet of food and an assortment of drinks.

"The food is really good," said Jenna Roberts, a friend of Williams. "I think this will definitely be successful to help fund his medical bills."

Mount Pleasant senior Lindsay Theisen said she went to school with Williams and they have been in the same group of friends for about five years.

"It's good that he is here," Theisen said. "We are here for support."
