CMU's Big Brothers Big Sisters is asking single students to sport money for dates in a new fundraising effort.

The CMU chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters is teaming up with Beta Theta Pi to host a date auction at 9:30 p.m. today at Wayside Central, 2000 S. Mission St.

This will be the first date auction by the CMU BBBS chapter since the RSO's start two years ago.

"It is proven if someone has a positive mentor they are less likely to be involved in negative activities and have a better life," said Marysville senior Jennifer Henry, CMU chapter BBBS president.

Lowell sophomore Steve Witte, BBBS member, said the group decided to host a date auction to make the fundraiser unique.

Witte said there will be 12 men and 10 women ready to be auctioned off.

Henry said the RSO tried to pick well-known people around campus, including Beta Theta Pi President Adam Militello.

"I was approached by the Delta Chi president and asked to be someone who gets auctioned off," said Militello, an Essexville junior.

He said although he knows little about BBBS, he is looking forward to being part of the auction.

Henry said there will be a section reserved for auction winners and their dates to sit and chat, but no actual date following the event is required.

"All proceeds from the event go to the BBBS chapter in Mount Pleasant," Henry said. "In Mount Pleasant, the program is run in two or three schools and there is also community based mentor programs."

BBBS will sell tickets in the Down Under Food Court from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today for $3 each. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 each.

"We are hoping to see about 200 people and raise about $1,000," Henry said.
