The painting is not limited to children. Anyone can participate by creating a tile surrounding the Chippewa River theme.

"The tiles help the community be invested in the library," Deni-Owen said.

Mitchell said the library chose to put together the fundraiser because it gives families the opportunity to do an activity together.

"It's a wonderful way to decorate the new children's floor," she said.

The library is asking voters on May 6 to approve 2.6 mills for 20 years to fund the project. That new rate would raise $2.2 million, $1.8 million of which would go toward operating costs and the rest to construction. The library's current 10-year, 1.75 millage, which raises about $1.4 million, is set to expire at the end of the year.

She said they are expecting another 22 percent increase in the next eight years.

"Because of this, it is necessary for the library to expand," she said.

People can paint tiles anytime during library hours or at Let's Do the Dishes. Tile vouchers can be purchased at the library, then taken to Let's Do the Dishes.
