Ted Kjolhede died in his home early Sunday morning at age 84.
The former coach and athletic director attended Central Michigan University as a student in the early 1940s. He returned as a physical education faculty member and head men's basketball coach in 1956. Kjolhede was named national coach of the year in 1966 and remained coach until 1971.
In 1973, he became CMU's athletic director, a position he held until his retirement in 1984.
"He certainly was a Chippewa from beginning to end," said Roy Kramer, who was CMU's head football coach from 1967 to 1977. "He was the essence of the maroon and gold spirit. He loved Central Michigan, he grew up with Central Michigan, and it was his life."
Visiting hours for Kjolhede will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Clark Family Funeral Chapel, 114 S. Bradley St. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 400 S. Main St.
