Talking in class is rude
Issue date: 2/25/08 Section: Voices
I can't even begin to tell you how sick I am of people having side conversations in class. They talk over the teacher and over other students who are nervously presenting in front of the class ... whatever. It's SO uncool! I mean, I can see asking a quick question or complementing someone's shoes during roll, but give me a break. Some of these conversations go on for half the class period. It has become commonplace in my classes to have this happen among one or more pairs of students. What's worse is that many of these students are studying to be teachers! Do they mean to say they won't care if kids talk in their classrooms when they become teachers? Because my students damn well will not talk in my class while another person is speaking. Many of these professors are teaching us to be teachers who ignore students talking in our classroom. How especially painful is it to sit and watch conversations going on while the professor is instructing a METHODS class? Ouch! Get with it people ... this isn't high school. it's rude, it's distracting, and it makes me tempted to do it too. Every time I do, I miss something really critical. Professors, kindly remind your students in a loving way that they can't talk in class.

This is where (1) you need to politely ask the people to stop because you cant hear whats going on, or (2) find out from the professor why (s)he is not excercising more control over the class. (Continued…)

These students are obviously a distraction because Ms. Wickham can't even write a proper letter to the editor. I really hope she won't be teaching my child. (Continued…)
