Christina Eyers was ecstatic when she received a phone call from the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association a few weeks ago.

"I was excited and honored," said the assistant professor of physical education and sport and clinical education coordinator. "It's just to be recognized at that level is quite an honor."

Eyers received the Living Memorial Doctoral Scholarship and $2,000, which she will use toward her doctoral research project.

Rene Shingles, a physical education and sport associate professor, said she wasn't surprised when Eyers received the award.

"She's an excellent candidate," she said. "I was elated for her."

Eyers, currently a student in the educational leadership program at CMU, is writing her dissertation on college wrestlers and the risk of attaining eating disorders.

Shingles said the award will greatly improve the quality of Eyers' research.

"This will be a great resource," she said. "As faculty, (the department is) very supportive of Christina and her work."

Pamela Eddy, an associate professor and director of the doctoral program of educational leadership, said the award will be able to expand her research greatly.

"(The award) gives her some resources she will be able to use," she said. "It recognizes the value of what she will be researching."

Her dissertation on wrestlers and eating disorders is a topic she has been interested in for a long time. She said she wants to see if there is a relationship between eating disorders and men, particularly athletes.

"It's not something that's discussed often," she said. "There's not a lot of literature about males (with eating disorders), especially male athletes."

The award is given to a member of the Great Lakes Athletics Trainers' Association in the Great Lakes region. Eyers will receive the award at the association's winter meeting during March in Toledo.

Both of the departments have been supportive of her and her work, Eyers said.

"It reflects well on the educational leadership department," she said. "It's been nice to have the support."
