Spring break usually means the beginning of the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the men's basketball team. But this year, Central will host its biggest rival - Western Michigan - at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Rose Arena, most likely with the student section noticeably absent.

The men's basketball team won its second Mid-American Conference road game Saturday 80-73 against Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Ill. Sophomore forward Marko Spica came off the bench to record a team and career-high 19 points. Spica went 6-for-7 from the field and 7-for-7 from the foul line.

Mach wins 800m for CMU's only first-place finish

YPSILANTI - Senior Abraham Mach leaned back, spread his arms and let out a victorious yell Saturday after placing first in the 800-meter race. His win would be the only first-place finish for CMU in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships at Bob Parks Track.

Chippewas make 10 three-pointers

Men's basketball coach Ernie Zeigler called out his team's toughness after CMU's blowout loss at Western Michigan in January. But Zeigler said CMU played with the tenacity it needed to in the 72-68 win against rival Western on Tuesday night in Rose Arena.

YPSILANTI - The women's track and field team walked out of Bob Parks Track at Eastern Michigan in ninth place Friday. Central finished the first day of the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships with 12 points. The leaders after the six events are Ball State and Akron with 45 points each.

It looked like it would be a happy senior day for the five departing players with three seconds left in regulation Sunday at Rose Arena. Senior guard Giordan Watson was at the free-throw line after being inexplicably fouled by UT's Anthony Byrd with the score tied.

Baseball breaks six-game losing streak

Hoorelbeke hits two home runs in 18-0 win

The baseball team broke a six-game losing streak and picked up its first win on its Florida road trip Friday with an 18-0 win against Fairfield University in Bradenton, Fla. The game was CMU's first in the Florida All-Star Baseball Challenge. "It was a good day for us, both offensively,(and) defensively we had three double play balls and (Steve) Teno did a nice job on the mound," said coach Steve Jaksa.

Wrestling wins seventh consecutive MAC Championships title

Chippewas will send nine to NCAA Championships; Smith, Beebe earn wild-cards

The wrestling team won its seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday in Kent, Ohio. Seven individual titles propelled the Chippewas to the tournament win with 110 points. Kent State was second with 75.5, while Northern Illinois was third with 60.

Van earns minutes with improved post play

It took one game for Marcus Van to solidify his role as a starting forward on the men's basketball team. After sophomore guard Jordan Bitzer made two 3-pointers to open CMU's Feb. 20 game against Ball State at Rose Arena, Van found himself in the zone. The junior transfer went on to make the next five field goals for the Chippewas, and seven of their last nine in the half.

Women improving as meet nears

One meet will define the women's track and field team's season after six months of training and eight weeks of competition. Central competes in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships at Bob Parks Tracks on Friday and Saturday in Ypsilanti. Coach Karen Lutzke said every athlete must be at her best.

Wrestling readies for postseason

Coach Tom Borrelli's wrestling team will take the its highest-ever ranking to Kent, Ohio, on March 7 for the Mid-American Conference Championships. CMU is ranked second in this week's W.I.N Magazine dual meet poll, but Borrelli feels like the honor holds little meaning.

YPSILANTI - Freshman sprinter Jordan Dunn was the highlight of the day for the women's track team Saturday at Bob Parks Track. Dunn finished third in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.65 seconds, but Central finished fifth at the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Ball State game a chance for revenge

Coach Sue Guevara blamed the women's basketball team's recent loss to Ball State on turnovers and a lack of defense. BSU beat CMU 82-57 on Jan. 23. CMU allowed the Cardinals to shoot 54.4 percent and committed 20 turnovers off which BSU scored 28 points. The Chippewas get their chance for redemption against the 12-14 Cardinals at 7 p.

Gymnastics supportive of NIU during healing

The shootings Feb. 14 at Northern Illinois may have been more than 300 miles away, but the CMU gymnastics team is getting a unique chance to help the university move forward. At 2 p.m. March 2, the NIU gymnastics team will host its first home meet against CMU since that tragic day nearly two weeks ago.

Post qualified for the finals in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships by one-hundredth of a second Saturday for the men's track and field team at Bob Parks Track.

Junior pole vaulter looks to defeat Kent State rival

Junior Marcus Breidinger was unable to get over the 16-feet, 9-inch bar in last season's Mid-American Conference Championships, finishing second to Kent State sophomore Jeremy Brading. Breidinger heads back to the MAC Championships Friday after setting a personal best of 17'1'' at the Jack Skoog Open last weekend.

Club hockey experiences success and defeat throughout season

Last weekend's last-minute 5-4 loss to Michigan State ended a very up and down season for the club hockey team. The first part of the team's season saw a high amount of success. CMU was 10-3 and climbed into the top five in the rankings, but finished the regular season 12-17.
