YPSILANTI - Senior Abraham Mach leaned back, spread his arms and let out a victorious yell Saturday after placing first in the 800-meter race.

His win would be the only first-place finish for CMU in the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships at Bob Parks Track. Mach finished with a time of 1 minute, 52.7 seconds and scored 10 points for CMU.

The Chippewas and the University at Buffalo tied for last place with a team score of 47 points. Eastern Michigan won its third consecutive MAC Indoor Championship with 207 points.

"I just wanted to win," Mach said. "I am a senior and I wanted to represent our team that was the goal."

Freshman Emanuel Sledge, freshman Kyle Ortin, sophomore David Aschcraft, and Mach finished second in the 4x400 meter relay and scored eight points for Central. The team had a time of 3:17.

"Overall we are really good runners," Ashcraft said. "Another reason we do well is our confidence in each other and in our anchor, Mach. He is a monster when he gets hot, and knowing that we have him in the end is a big confidence boost."

Junior Marcus Breidinger and sophomore Mike McGregor finished in second and third, respectively, in the pole vault. Breidinger came into the event with the highest height of 5.2 meters, but finished the event with a height of 4.9m. Akron's Michael Uhle won the event with a height of 5.2 meters

"I don't know what happened to today," Breidinger said. "Maybe I just got cocky. It's frustrating and I feel like I let the team down. I'm happy for (Uhle), but I know that it should have been me."

"To be blunt, I'm very disappointed," said coach Jim Knapp. "We didn't bring that competitive spirit to the meet at all. We've been though a whole season, and we've been planning for this weekend all year long. I expected a lot more from the today then what I got."

Also scoring for CMU was senior Joe Mielke with a sixth-place finish in the high jump. Junior Riak Mabil finished fifth in the 3,000m run with a time of 8:33.43, and junior Marcell Maxwell placed fifth in the 60m dash in 6.97 seconds. Sophomore Oz Lifshitz placed fourth in the triple jump with distance of 14.52 meters.

"They brought me here from Israel to win the MAC, and I couldn't do it today," Lifshitz said. "I can just hope that the outdoor will be different, and I can get revenge on those guys."
