YPSILANTI - Freshman sprinter Jordan Dunn was the highlight of the day for the women's track team Saturday at Bob Parks Track.

Dunn finished third in the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.65 seconds, but Central finished fifth at the Mid-American Conference Championships.

Akron won the title with 106 points, followed by Western Michigan with 96, Miami with 88 and Ball State with 86.

CMU totaled 55.5.

Dunn said two weeks prior to the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships that she wanted to run a 7.65 and finish in the top five in the 60-meter dash.

Coach Karen Lutzke said her goal was accomplished by sneaking up on her opponents.

"When you're a freshman you have the advantage of nobody knowing who you are and you can just compete," she said.

While for Dunn the day was a success, it was not for two of the team's senior runners: Jenaie Edwards and Tempestt Stanford.

Edwards was unable to defend her 400 title and finished second in a time of 55.27 seconds, over a second slower than her winning time the previous season.

"I just didn't have it today - I was flat," Edwards said.

Edwards also placed fifth in the 200.

Stanford finished with two seventh places in the 60 and the 200.

Stanford's time of 7.7 seconds was her slowest time since the Michigan Intercollegiates on Feb. 2. Her finals time (25.51) in the 200 was .46 seconds slower than her preliminaries time (25.05).

"It just wasn't my day all around, I just felt flat," Stanford said. "I didn't feel like I had the get up but I'm pretty sure my outdoor season is not going to be like this."

The duo was also part of the 4x400 team that finished fourth, after coming into the event with the second fastest time throughout the season.

"I just don't think it was our best performance," Edwards said.

Scoring for the Chippewas in the running events during the weekend were freshman Reaenne Lohner in the 800 (seventh place), sophomore Sarah Squires in the mile (fifth), junior Kelly McClure in the 5000 (fifth), the distance medley team in fifth, sophomore Cara Duke in the 400 (fifth), and freshman Brittnee Shreve in the 60 (eighth).

In the field events, sophomore Erika Schroll finished in a tie for third in the high jump, sophomore Whitney Johnson finished seventh in the weight throw and freshman Aleisha Leeper finished fifth in the triple jump. Junior Shanna Tamminga placed seventh in the pentathalon on Friday night.

The team competes in the Alex Wilson Invitational next weekend in Notre Dame.
