Michigan Legislative Black Caucus chairperson Brenda Clack said the transition from high school to college can be a tough one to make for students.

"We found that many students do not adjust well," the state representative said. "We want the students to talk to us."

The caucus will host a forum at 5 p.m. today in the Charles V. Park Library Auditorium to discuss this topic and several others relating to students.

Clack, D-Flint, said the caucus has been looking to host forums on college campuses to show support for students and answer their questions.

"The objective is to follow through with one of our initiatives," she said.

Weather prevented the legislators from attending their original forum on Feb. 6, so they rescheduled their visit to CMU as soon as they could, said Kathy Wilbur, vice president for government relations and public affairs.

Wilbur said University President Michael Rao and the caucus have been in contact and showed interest in coming to CMU, especially after the discovery of four nooses in the Engineering and Technology Building in November.

"We suggested that it might be a good idea that they come to campus," Wilbur said. "(The noose incident) made us pay more attention to putting it in the books."

Clack said the visit to CMU hastened the caucus' decision to host a forum to talk to students.

"We want to bring support and answer questions," she said.

The caucus does not plan on talking to students on diversity issues alone. They plan on holding an open forum regarding any issues students or faculty may have, including tuition, loans and other topics that students would like to bring to their attention.

The President's Office, the Office for Institutional Diversity and the Office of Government and Public Affairs are sponsoring the forum, which is open to the public.

Associate Vice President for Institutional Diversity Denise Green said the forum is a great way for students to learn more on the topic of diversity.

"I would encourage students to come," she said in a Feb. 6 Central Michigan Life article. "We need to do a better job educating students on diversity."
